Apart from specifying the legal principles governing the processing of personal data by the European Institutions, Regulation (EC) 45/2001 provides that each institution or body must appoint at least one person as Data Protection Officer. The main task of this person is to ensure, in an independent manner, the internal application of the provisions of the Regulation in the Institution concerned. The Data Protection Officer is also required to keep a register of all the processing operations on personal data carried out by the Institution which has appointed him/her.
